Authorities reported they were alerted by a resident who discovered a automobile in Hanau marked with reddish substance

Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Officers then found many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials say early analysis suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.

Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.

A senior political figure commented the incident left him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.

"This act hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
