Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.
He stated in a release that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their development".
The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm expressed it accepted the economist's determination to resign.
"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company commented.
Political Context
This development arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature voted on recently to approve a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to make public its records on Epstein.
The measure will afterward head to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he expects to approve the legislation, after modifying his stance on the matter following pushback from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the legislative panel recently included numerous well-known personalities in the financier's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails revealed that the economist and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often seeking to introduce the official to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were shared with the wider community, he stated he took "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and mend connections with the persons nearest to me".
Career Background
The professor served in leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When announcing his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be associated with the organization.
Summers joined the directorate of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
