A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
At least 64 individuals died in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. More than 80 suspects were arrested.
Intense confrontations erupted when around 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Operation Impact
The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is regarded as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Numerous individuals were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "war zone" since the raid started.
